“Standard of care” is the term used for the best existing treatment option in the clinic. Standard of care varies for different subtypes of MBC and is described in NCCN Guidelines. The guidelines change over time as new medications and combinations of medications are approved and used by doctors.
In a clinical trial, patients can receive the investigational medication and/or standard of care treatment. In this way, the new medication can be compared to the best existing treatment option: the standard of care.
