As you search for breast cancer clinical trials, you’ll likely come across language that says the trial is accepting people with “advanced breast cancer”, “locally advanced breast cancer”, or “metastatic breast cancer”. Sometimes you’ll find trials that accept two of these categories, or possibly all three. To understand the differences between these terms, see the definitions below.

  • ABC Information  In ABC Global Alliance’s definition, advanced breast cancer comprises inoperable locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) and metastatic breast cancer (MBC).
What is metastatic breast cancer?
  • Metastatic Breast Cancer Metastatic breast cancer is also known as stage IV, or stage 4 breast cancer. It refers to breast cancer that has spread to another part of the body, commonly the liver, brain, bones, or lungs, as well as ovaries, bladder, abdominal lining, and others.
